Playlists : Do you want to combine all your favorite songs into one place? You can cook playlists of your favorite music and podcasts on your iTunes, Mac, and iPhone or iPad.
You have a healthy collection of music and other content in iTunes or the Apple Music app but you do not always want to listen to the whole album. Sometimes you just want to hear your favorite songs. This is where you open the playlist. You can create playlists in iTunes or the Apple Music app and sync them with your phone or tablet, or you can create playlists directly on your mobile device. You can also create multiple playlists for movies, TV shows, and podcasts.
If you are using macOS Catalina or higher on a Mac, you can use the Apple Music app. Anyone using Windows PC or older Mac will use iTunes. Both systems work the same way.
Create New Playlist
You can create your own playlist in a few different ways. In iTunes or Music app, click File> New> Playlist to create a new item under the playlist section. Type the name you want to give to your new playlist, such as artist name or genre.
Click on Song Entries to see your individual song library. Find the tracks you want to add to the playlist and drag them to the new playlist you have added. Select multiple songs at once using Shift + Click or Ctrl + Click on Windows and Shift + Click or Command + Click on macOS.
Another way to add a song is to right-click on a song, go to the Add to Playlist, and select a playlist. You can also create playlists by selecting each song you want to add, then right-clicking on any of the songs. Scroll through the Playlist, then select New Playlist to make the songs appear in the playlist.
You can edit your playlist in many ways. To delete a song, right-click on it and select Remove from playlist in the popup menu.
You can also rearrange the order of the songs. Select and drag the song up or down the list. Release your mouse when the song is put in its new place.
Do you want to add a brief description for the playlist? Right-click on album art and select Add Description. You can also burn songs to a CD by clicking Burn Burn Playlist on Disk
Create Smart Smart Playlists
Although playlists should be created and managed manually, smart playlists are automatically updated as you add music to your library. You can create one of these by opening File> New> Smart Playlists, and selecting the rules that will apply to the playlist.
Save the selection as Music, then use the drop-down menus to set playlist rules. The first menu offers you a variety of options, including Artist, Album, Composer, Genre, and Year. In the second drop-down menu, you can select an alternative method, such as “contains” or “does not contain.”
Use the open space to enter an artist name, album, genre, or other item based on your preferences from the start menu. ITunes automatically tries to predict the name you want. Choose the right word. To add more than one rule, click the + sign. Choose a genre that matches an artist, album, genre, or year. Select the conditions and enter the details to complete the rule.
When you are done, make sure the Live update option is checked, then click OK. Assuming you did not specify a numerical limit or length of items in the list, your playlist automatically grows as you add new music to your rules.
Do you want to delete the playlist? Right-click it and select ‘Delete Library from the menu,’ or just select it and press the Delete button on your keyboard.
Edit the default iTunes Playlist
Note in the left-hand window that iTunes already has lists of playlists in your purchased music, songs with similar features, and the music you usually play. Click on one of these lists to check out the songs.
ITunes manages and continues to update this automated playlist as you listen to and add additional music, but you can change the rules for how it is adjusted. Open one of these lists and click the Edit Rules link below the playlist title.
You can now change some of the playlist settings, such as duration, media type, and number of items. Click OK when you are done for your changes to take effect.
Create Playlists Movies, TV Shows, or Podcasts
You can also create playlists for TV shows, movies, podcasts, and audiobooks. If you are on a Windows PC or using an older version of macOS, you can do this in iTunes. Mac users using Catalina or higher can switch to the Podcasts app.
In iTunes, select the library you want to see, such as TV shows or podcasts. Then follow the same steps described in creating the music playlist. The process is slightly different from the Podcasts app. Instead of making a playlist, you create a channel and add podcasts and episodes of your choice.
Now, maybe you want to sync your playlists with your iPhone or iPad to listen to them on the go. Connect your device to your computer. In iTunes, click the icon for your device. On a Mac with Catalina or higher, open Finder and select your device.
Select the library that contains the playlist you want to sync, such as Music or TV Games. In the Sync window, check the playlists you want to sync. Click the Insert or Sync button to sync your selected content, including the test playlists.
After sync ends, log in to your device. Open the app that contains the playlists that you sync. Tap the playlist and you should see the synced items.
Create New Playlists on iPhone or iPad
You can also bypass your computer and create playlists directly on your iPhone or iPad. On the Playlist screen on your device, tap the New button in the top right corner of the screen or the New Playlist button. Type the name and description of your playlist and then tap Add Music.
In the Library window, select Songs, Albums, or another category you want to view in order to capture items in your playlist.
