Lithuania is threatening to stop using Russian oil and gas

Lithuania president said the country was determined to halt oil and gas purchases in Russia. Which is a recent sign that other EU countries are planning to increase sanctions on Moscow by invading Ukraine.

“It can cause problems, but those problems will not be serious,” said President Gitanas Nauseda.

Lithuania received about 63% of its oil imports from Russia in 2019.

President Nauseda said the figure was now down after an oil refinery stopped buying Russian crude oil.

Western nations hit Moscow with sanctions late last month over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The US has blocked imports of Russian power, and the UK has ended Russia’s imports of oil.

Gas in Russia

The EU, which receives about 40% of its gas in Russia. Has said it will reduce reliance on the oil by two-thirds by a year.

Lithuanian president’s warning

President Nauseda also acknowledged ongoing concerns. Including with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. About whether the Baltic states – including Lithuania – could be Russia’s next president, Vladimir Putin.

“Unfortunately this is true. As Putin declared that the greatest catastrophe of the 20th Century was the collapse of the Soviet Union. He was thinking of the Baltic states, because they are an integral part of the Soviet Union, too.

“So, this is a threat. We have never been cunning that we will be corrupt,” he said.

But he said the country had increased spending on defense, including military equipment. He also believes in the NATO alliance.

“I strongly believe in Nato’s ability to function effectively as a joint defense force,” he said. “I see, too, that this alliance is working, with more deployment and military power down.

“And this is the best proof for me that Nato works,” he said.
