James Michael Tyler : Friendly actors including Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox and Matt LeBlanc honored James Michael Tyler, who played Gunther in the sitcom, after his death at the age of 59.
Tyler was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 2018.
Aniston said the show “would not have been the same” without Tyler’s performance as a Central Perk waiter.
“Thank you for the laughter you have brought us into this game and for the rest of our lives. You will miss it so much,” she said.
Tyler’s favorite character worked in the coffee house of the show and was in love with Aniston’s character Rachel, who worked there as a waitress in the early stages of the show.
He shared an Instagram post that included a photo of James Michael Tyler from the set and a clip of the two in the last episode as Gunther announced his love affair with the walking Rachel, who gently rejected him.
Co-star Cox, who played Monica’s role, added to her charge. “The amount of gratitude that you bring to the room and that you show on a daily basis is the greatest gratitude I have for knowing you,” he wrote.
“Rest in peace, James.”
Lisa Kudrow, who played Phoebe in the game, offered: “James Michael Tyler, we’ll miss you.” Commenting on the line from that program, he added: “Thank you for being present for all of us.”
LeBlanc, in turn, shared a photo of his character Joey chatting with Gunther in Central Perk.
“We had a lot of laughs friend,” LeBlanc said. “You’re going to miss it. RIP my friend.”
David Schwimmer, Ross, thanked Tyler for “playing such a wonderful. Unforgettable role” and for being “a great gentleman and around the screen”.
“You’ll be remembered friend,” he continued.
James Michael Tyler has appeared in nearly 150 episodes of the comedy series, which ran from 1994 to 2004 because Gunther was a very popular character for fans.
Tyler’s manager said the actor “passed away peacefully at his home in Los Angeles on Sunday morning”.
The statement added: “The world knew him as Gunther (the Seventh Friend) … but Michael’s loved ones knew him as an actor, musician, cancer awareness lawyer, and loving husband.
“Wanting to help as many people as possible, he bravely set out his story and became a campaign. For those with prostate cancer for … 40-year-old blood.”
David Crane, co-founder, told the BBC that James Michael Tyler started by adding to the game. And was given a role because he could work with a coffee machine.
“As time went on, I think we saw that he was funny – a very good character,” Cran said.
“We’ve been giving her more, And when we saw that there was an issue about her secret love for Rachel, it was just a gift we kept giving.”
During James Michael Tyler joke, Crane added: “His delivery was flawless. He was so good that we found ourselves going to him to punch the whole scene or the whole episode.
“In a very short time he created this indelible character.”
In May, Tyler briefly appeared on the Friends reunion via Zoom.
“It was the 10th most memorable year of my life, honestly,” the actor said at the time.
“I just didn’t think there was a better experience. All these people were fun and it was just a pleasure to work with them. It sounded so special.”
