Halyna Hutchins dies after accidentally shot by Alec Baldwin with a shotgun in a Rust movie set
Halyna Hutchins’ son Andros was so shocked by the news of his mother’s death that he remained silent for two days.
“Her father managed to trick a few words from her now but the result was very bad.
“This tragedy has ruined a perfect family – everyone who knows it is devastated by grief.”
Halyna Hutchins was born in 1979 in Horodets, Zhytomyr Oblast, USSR, but grew up in the Russian city of Murmansk, in a Soviet Arctic military base, where his father worked for the Soviet Navy. He called himself a “military force”. According to film historian Jim Hemphill, he became interested in the film while living in a military base. Halyna Hutchins studied at the National Agricultural University and then studied at Kyiv National University, first studying economics before changing his studies to journalism. Hutchins graduated there with a degree in international journalism and worked in feature films as a investigative journalist in Eastern Europe. She met her husband Matthew, who is an American, while in Kyiv. They have a son.
She moved to Los Angeles, California, to pursue a career in filmmaking, production, and photography. In Los Angeles, he met Bob Primes [de], a filmmaker. He encouraged Hutchins to apply to the American Film Institute Conservatory, where he was a teacher. Stephen Lighthill [cs; de] trained him there.
She was a photographic director for Adam 20 Mortimer’s 2020 film Archenemy.
Halyna Hutchins supported the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), a trade union representing Hollywood workers and technical staff, and organized a strike with dangerous working conditions a few days before his death.

On October 21, 2021, Hutchins was working in Santa Fe, New Mexico, as a film director for a Western Rust film set, when actor Alec Baldwin released a shotgun, and shot and directed director Joel Souza Baldwin issued a statement the next day expressing shock and sadness at the incident. Halyna Hutchins said he would co-operate with the police and provide support for his family.
It drew hundreds of people.
