Flood: Pakistan declares national emergency

Flood: Pakistan declares national emergency as flood death toll reaches 937
Pakistan is under an unprecedented spell of monsoon and data suggests the possibility of another cycle re-emerging in September. The daily quoted her as saying.
Pakistan’s government has declared a national emergency. As floods caused by the rain have so far killed 937 people, including 343 children. And left at least 30 million homeless.

Sindh province reported the highest death toll as 306 people lost their lives due to floods and rain-related incidents from June 14 to Thursday,. According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab province recorded 185 and 165 deaths

Balochistan reported 234 deaths, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab province recorded 185 and 165 deaths, respectively. In Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, 37 people have been killed during the current monsoon rains. While nine deaths have been reported in the Gilgit-Baltistan region.

According to the NDMA, Pakistan received 166.8 mm of rainfall in August. Against the average of 48 mm, an increase of 241 percent. Sindh and Balochistan – the worst affected regions – witnessed a 784% and 496% increase in the monsoon flood, Dawn News reported.

The abnormal increase in rainfall has caused flash floods across the country, especially in the southern part of Pakistan.

Climate Change Minister Sherry Rehman said on Thursday that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has set up a war room at NDMA to conduct humanitarian operations across the country. She said the incessant torrential rain was making it difficult to carry out rescue operations, especially helicopter airstrikes.

8th monsoon cycle

Pakistan is going through the 8th monsoon cycle. Usually the country has only three to four cycles of [monsoon] rains. The minister said during a press conference in Islamabad.

Comparing the current situation to the devastating floods of 2010 earlier this week. Senator Rehman said the current situation is worse.

The water is not only flowing from the north like in 2010. But is equally or more destructive in its scale and destructive power, she added.

According to the senator. Flash floods caused by heavy rains swept away bridges and communication infrastructure in various areas of the country. Nearly 30 million people are homeless, thousands of them displaced and without food, she said.

The minister emphasized the need for help from international donors. Saying the need for shelter and aid is dire, according to what the provinces have said.

Sindh has asked for one million tents and Balochistan has demanded 100,000 tents. She said, adding that all tent makers have been mobilized and external donors for tents have also been approached.
